An unexpected break and solid run to the first turn was the recipe for success on Saturday, as Gable Gulf Kennel’s Gable Cuidado (Gable Dodge – Speedy Shana) easily won the 20th running of the National Night of Stars. The Night of Stars is a bi-annual event, which highlights seventeen of the best greyhound tracks nationwide. The American Greyhound Track Operators Association sponsored simulcast race card is a charity event with the proceeds donated to greyhound adoption groups around the country.
The Gulf Greyhound Park contribution to the Night of Stars XX happened in the fourteenth race and was well worth waiting for on this night. The Gulf Greyhound Park entry into the national showcase was a semi-final qualifier for the $10,000 Texas Fall Sprint and featured some of the best sprinters on the Gulf Coast of Texas. The championship final runs on Saturday, November 10.
The Night of Stars/Fall Sprint Semi-final field looked like a fine mix of early speed and latecomers, and when the box opened, the race did not disappoint. It featured Bob’s Wal, littermate to 2006 Rural Rube Award winner Bob’s Skeet; CL Skip A Bid, winner of six straight top grade races; and eventual winner Gable Cuidado, just to name a few. There were plenty of big name competitors with lots of credentials; however, it was the “monster of the midway,” Gable Cuidado, who would shine on the big stage this night.
As the box broke open for the NOS XX 14th race, it was over, as the veteran broke right behind the hot puppy, CL Skip A Bid. The 4 year old red brindle male, known for his awesome late speed, had the field just where he wanted them, early speed in front and the rest behind him. As the field passed the tote board, Cuidado gained the lead and never looked back.
Gable Cuidado won by a huge eight-length margin and ran a very fast 30.18 over the 550-yard course. This win shows that the cagey veteran still has what it takes to win the big races. It makes next week’s $10,000 Texas Fall Sprint Final very interesting with a super field competing for the title.
The rest of the field ran as follows: CL Skip A Bid (2nd), Bob’s Design (3rd), Bob’s Wal (4th), Eli Skinner (5th), Iza Sweetness (6th), Cry Cali (7th), and Shadows Bythebay (8th). |
