Notes from the Racing Office for Highlights from Sunday May 19th:
Highlights from Friday May 17
Trainer Sissy Sabell and Big Water Kennel squeaked out top honors for the evening winning three races ahead of Bone Man Racing Kennel, Rader Racing, LLC and K-Rod Kennel who each claimed two victories of their own.
The first of two top grade AA duels over the 550-yard course in race #7 provided an upset as Slatex Dallas from Bone Man Racing Kennel stole the win at longshot odds of 11 to 1. Starting from post position #6, the 55-pound black daughter of Trent Lee – Slatex Isabell got the jump on her competition streaking quickly to a one length lead ahead of Kells Comanche of Lingle Kennel and race favorite Spry Cairo of K-Rod Kennel. Keeping a firm grip on her lead, Slatex Dallas turned away the constant pressure from Kells Comanche to reach the finish line two lengths to the good in a time of 30.19 seconds for her second top grade win in her last three starts. The `alleged curse` of the Greyhound of the Week honors fell upon Spry Cairo as his two race winning streak was snapped after chasing the leaders for the entire journey finishing in third place three lengths behind.
In the featured grade AA tenth race, SOS Awesome of Currid Racing ran away to another box to wire winning effort and punched his ticket to the Greyhound of the Week honors. Starting from the #7 post position as the even money favorite, the 67-pound black son of Trent Lee – KB’s Extra Fast popped out on top in typical fashion to establish a three length lead ahead of MW’s Morrigan of D.Q. Williams Kennel. Carving a path along the rail, SOS Awesome cruised on the lead to a final winning margin of three lengths in a time of 30.07 seconds making it two wins in a row for the Freddy Currid trained superstar. After winning in grade A in her previous start, MW’s Morrigan appears to be rounding back into good form chasing SOS Awesome throughout and held off a late bid from Also Rebel of K-Rod Kennel to take the place spot.
Highlights from Saturday May 18
As another large crowd attended the special 17 race matinee performance in anticipation of the Preakness Stakes, the world of thoroughbred racing was denied another Triple Crown candidate as Oxbow went wire to wire to score the victory and putting a stop to the quest of Kentucky Derby winner Orb.
The athletes from D.Q. Williams Kennel and K-Rod Kennel put on quite a show of their own Saturday afternoon winning four races each for their respective kennels with Big Water Kennel continuing their success adding three more wins to their weekly total.
The `upset bug` made another appearance in the lone top grade AA contest of the day in race #11 as Kells Casanova of Tri-State Kennel earned the victory in his top grade debut. Sporting the green colors of the #4 post position at odds of 11 to 1, the 76-pound brindle son of Kiowa Sweet Trey – Too Late jumped out on top and led every step of the 550-yard trip withstanding the challenges from Primed to Win of D.Q. Williams Kennel and Also Rainbow of K-Rod Kennel to win by one length in a time of 30.10 seconds. Also Rainbow chased evenly throughout until rallying in the stretch along the rail to take second place. Making his first official start since April 2, even money race favorite Primed to Win of D.Q. Williams Kennel had his return to the racing scene spoiled after chasing Kells Casanova and then outbid late to finish in third place two lengths behind the winner.
Highlights from Sunday May 19
For the second consecutive performance, last week’s Kennel of the Week, D.Q. Williams Kennel, and this year’s top kennel, K-Rod Kennel, each shared top honors for the day winning three races each while Big Water Kennel and Libby Racing Kennels also enjoyed a good start to the week with two trips to the winner’s circle.
The struggles for the post time favorites in the grade AA contests continued in the featured grade AA tenth race as Slatex Slaton of Bone Man Racing Kennel scored her first top grade victory since November 30, 2012. Starting from post position #4, the 62-pound black daughter of Trent Lee – Slatex Isabell won the race to the first turn ahead of Palm Beach Kennel Club invader Turbo Ted from Rader Racing, LLC and Texan Mercilus of Tri-State Kennel. With a three length lead, Slatex Slaton sprinted away to a final winning margin of six lengths in the fastest time of the day at 29.87 seconds following in the footsteps of her victorious littermate from Friday evening, Slatex Dallas. Making his third start at Gulf Greyhound Park, Turbo Ted finally found success landing on the paysheet for the first time with this second place effort as the post time favorite. Texan Mercilus survived a stumble around the far turn and held on to the show spot ahead of Kells Wild Bill of Libby Racing Kennels.
D.Q. Williams Kennel swept the first and second place portions of the purse money in the 330-yard `super sprint` grade TAA third race with No Holding Back and Get Boy Claude. Taking advantage of the inside #1 post position, No Holding Back broke quickly to the lead but was joined immediately by her kennelmate in the #7 post position Get Boy Claude. The two leaders raced stride for stride for the entire journey with No Holding Back getting the best of it with a one length victory in a time of 17.41 seconds. This makes two wins in a row for the 63-pound brindle daughter of Coldwater Torres – Mindless while Get Boy Claude continued his success over the 330-yard course finishing either first or second in 13 career races.
