If you had to label the 2009 season at Gulf Greyhound Park, so far, the moniker is easy; `the year of the track records.` On Sunday afternoon, August 9, the 660-yard course track record lowered for the third time this season.

Libby Racing Kennel’s A’s Steverino lowered the mark to 36.26 from the previous track record set by Greta’s Hardrock at a stunning 36.30 back on May 6, which she lowered from her previous mark set at 36.38, back on February 22, which broke the long standing track record of 36.51 set by Bob’s Leoti way back in 1992. Confused yet? Now, barely mentioning the 550-yard course record, which was lowered twice this year, you get a much better understanding of why this is `year of the track records` at Gulf Greyhound Park.

Enough with the history of GGP’s track record, and back to the star of the show, A’s Steverino. The record setting event on Aug. 9th began from the six-post, where he came out of the box in second position. Usually, a track record setting effort means that the principle comes out on top, but in this case, Steverino wasn’t even in the lead at the first call, he was still in second. However, by the time they hit the toteboard, the two-year old son of Dodgem By Design and Sinead captured the lead. At the stretch call, A’s Steverino drew to a three-length lead and extended to 6-1/2-lengths at the finish line, running the course faster than any greyhound in the almost seventeen year history of Gulf Greyhound Park, 36.26. August 9, 2009 was a stellar day for A’s Steverino, the Libby Racing Kennels, and owner Audrey Suchicki.
